Bronx Zoo Show At Ghettogloss Nov 14th
November 12th, 2008 Filed Under Art Scene, Exhibitions, News, Press

Originally conceived as just a Saturday afternoon cocktail party with art activities, Ghettogloss gallery launched its Bronx Zoo summer series this past June at the delightfully dancy downtown La Cita bar. Since then, until it ended in early October, the atmosphere turned into a proper drawing workshop, even garnering coverage from the LA Weekly where I was photographed and mentioned. I only made four appearances, however my work caught the eye of both Fiora at Ghettogloss and Flavorpill’s own Shana Nys Dambrot, whom is curating this show at Ghettogloss Gallery. The show is composed of only art works created at the Zoo. I will be well represented with 8 pieces!

Painting “Strangely Attractive”
November 10th, 2008 Filed Under News
Here’s Strangely Attractive’s latest music video which features me painting portraits of the band. It just went up on you tube. I used oil bars and it took about 20 minutes per portrait. Enjoy!

Inspiration not always from the model stand
November 9th, 2008 Filed Under Art Scene

My friend Jim Fitipaldi, hosted a drawing workshop recently at his new place in the Downtown L.A. Arts District with some of the models from the the old Bedlam days. It was nice to catch up with people I hadn’t seen in a while, one of which was Terry Ellsworth. Whom, while talking to at the bar, I was inspired to paint. Terry was nice enough to indulge me in my request and sat for an impromptu portrait. This is the result 15 minutes later.
Also, here are two more portraits I did that night “from the model stand”, Benny and his wife Marissa.

Bedlam and its Models
September 15th, 2008 Filed Under Art Scene, Press

Who doesn’t miss Tuesday nights at Bedlam? Here’s an article about the scene at the infamous drawing workshop and the models who created it. The shouts out to Jim Marquez and me, among other regulars.
My shout out: “From Jim Marquez’s lust and liquor fuelled narratives to Robert Vargas churning out explosive figurative paintings until the doors closed, LA’s savvy curious and downtown’s cornerstones, including those of the stature of developer Tom Gilmore, could feel the intangible thing that shapes the art side of downtown.”
The article:
Viva Kiki of Montparnasse!
(Musings inspired by Rick Mendoza’s August photography show at Boyd Street)
“Viva Bedlam” was the name of the show, and viva indeed. As photographer Rick Mendoza says, “I called it that because Bedlam didn’t go anywhere. We’re keeping it alive by doing what we do.” The Bedlam Mendoza speaks of is not so much the eponymous space, but the about that creative and raucous spirit that thrives in the downtown scene, some of which spun out of the Tuesday night event at Bedlam called Hades which was founded by a collective of art models. The memory of that scene is an enduring muse. Read the rest.

Me in the LA Weekly

Read Erin Broadley’s article “Ape Escape: Bikini-Clad Gorilla Girls Strike a Pose,”
in the LA Weekly on line. Erin gives me a nice mention, quote and posted some photos of me drawing at the zoo there at La Cita in downtown L.A. Kudos to Ghettogloss for putting this on!

Art Walk September 11
September 5th, 2008 Filed Under Art Scene, Art Walk, Exhibitions, Galleries, News
This Downtown Art Walk (September 11) you can find me in not one, not two, but three places. Here’s the info:
1. Katalyst Gallery (Main Str. Between 4th and 5th)
This new gallery, part of a nonprofit foundation for the arts, has given me a whole wall to work with. You’ll see 3-4 new paintings.
2. The Hive: Bee-rotica, an Erotic Art Show (On Spring between 7th and 8th)
A perennial favorite gallery…I pulled out a classic Vargas piece from the Bedlam days. It’s in the second room.
3. Bringing the Gallery to the Streets (Stella Dottir, on Main between 4th and 5th)
Last month, I was drawing on the street outside Stella Dottir’s atelier on Main. I was overwhelmed by the positive responses (including a lengthy mention in a 944 magazine article), and will be back at Stella’s on the 11th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Come say hello!

Me in 944 magazine
August 21st, 2008 Filed Under Art Scene, Art Walk, Press

In a Jeannine Denholm’s article in 944 magazine “Art Form LA: Our Downtown Denizen Does Culture at Dusk,” she did a great job capturing the vibe of the art walk…and mentioned me. (Thanks Jeannine!) Here’s what she had to say:”A little further up the street is the M.J. Higgins gallery where Robert Vargas does live drawing performance art on the street — imagine a much more interpretive, sophisticated version of those cheesy caricatures you get at the county fair. So if you don’t want to get dragged into an impromptu charcoal speed drawing, make sure you stand back in the crowd. If you’re lucky you might spot his muse, Miyoko — an older woman dressed in skinny jeans, black boots and a mink coat and hat. She’s become quite a fixture downtown, if only because most people wish they could look that good when they’re pushing 70.”
If you didn’t catch me outside the Higgins, I was the guy in front of Stella Dottir this past week and will be out with my art box many art walks to come. Read the full article here.
